Xeni Gwet’in Community-based Climate Adaptation Plan

The plan was a comprehensive examination of the climate vulnerability of the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation in northern British Columbia, Canada.  The planning methodology integrated Community-based and Ecosystem-based adaptation techniques.  The project modelled potential climate scenarios for the region, identified culturally significant ecosystem services, examined the ecosystem impacts of potential climate changes as well as socio-economic vulnerabilities and made wide ranging recommendations re adaptation measures.  The scope of measures included a mix of livelihood resilience and disaster risk reduction activities as well measures to mainstream adaptation objectives into ecosystem management, food security, health and safety, livelihood development, and infrastructure management.  Members of the community, including elders, youth, local government staff and local householders participated in the design, consultation, research and communication activities of the project.  Developed for the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation, Canada, 2009-2010.
